How Could You?

Jim Willis paid $7000 to place a full page ad in a Grand Rapids, Michigan newspaper. I dare anyone to read this essay and not have to reach for the tissue box.

Bottom line ... if you are going to take in a pet, take responsibility for it! They are not toys to be discarded when the novelty wears off, nor are they to be cast aside if they become inconvenient. Love them, care for them, keep them safe as if they were a child ... or don't bother having pets at all.

Please ... click the link below to continue reading the essay. Copy it in whole to your site, email it to your friends. Click on the PetFinders link over on the right and rescue an abandoned pet, or make a donation to a local shelter to help support their good work in caring for these vulnerable creature.

That’s ma girl!

Darling daughter Annie is a cheerleader for her school. During the summer, they went to cheerleading camp and came away with a tubful of awards. The local paper finally had a little blurb about their accomplishments.

JMS cheerleading squad wins awards
The 2003-2004 Jefferson Middle School cheerleaders attended the Universal Cheerleading Association Camp at the University of Tennessee this summer. The squad began preparing for camp in April and it won first place in Home Pom, first in Xtreme Routine and second in Cheer. The girls took home four trophies, all superior ribbons, and a spirit stick.

My baby girl is second from the left in the front row.

Browser Check

Browser screen captures in any browser, any version, any operating system.

Whoa! This is a nifty thing! It does just what it says. I have discovered that Konqueror is CSS stupid, as is Netscape 4. IE 5.5 and Opera have trouble interpreting "margin-top" and IE 4 just crashes. Safari on the Mac does quite nicely, as does Netscape 7, Mozilla and of course IE6.

Is anyone seeing anything crazy with other-than-IE-or-Mozilla? (what I have here)

Time Warp

I love nostalgia. I love to reminisce about childhood things ... the people, things, places that occupy the furthest reaches and deepest depths of my memories. The triggers that bring these memories forward are sometimes arcane ... a phrase heard, a smell, a snippet of a song. Sometimes, however, they just pop up and are there, in your face and you are time warped back.

I tripped across this today ... anyone younger than about 30, just won't understand.

Step back in time ...

I win! I win!

Holy Mother of God ... what a day. I finally took on the task of getting my Nucleus blog entries imported into MovableType. I did not know what I was getting into.

I finalized my layout last night. Nice, eh? I'm rather proud of that graphical achievement. But I was up until the wee hours working on it. I'm a typical Aries gal ... completing projects started is nothing less than an obsession. Sleep, food, potty all can wait ... must, must must finish this!! Heh ...

And then I had to get up early, despite today being Saturday, to pick up my daughter from her father's house. But no nap for mama! She's a cheerleader for her school's football team and they had a pre-season jamboree she had to be at. And I had to drive her because the bus was full. Did I mention that it was 95 degrees in the shade today? And the concession stand at the football field was out of any kind of diet drink ... blech! I hate sugared drinks!

Oh ... Really?

Oh ... Really? Part Deux

OK ... I installed Movable Type. And survived the ordeal. When I have some time (har har har!!) I will try to port this blog over to that. Nucleus has been OK ... but it is so damn picky, and customization is a royal pain. With MT, all the styles and such are applied through the control panel. With Nucleus, one has to create a separate style-sheet, upload, edit, re-upload. The installation of a plug-in can cause all kinds of hell, as I found out. I enabled FancyURLS here, and lost most of my graphics. I had to go back in and set absolute file paths for all of them. And it is still losing them on occasion.

So ... during the transition, probably this weekend, visits to this site may bring some rather ugly results. I was going to use the template I made with the orchid, but today I discovered a treasure trove of gorgeous photos, all free, royalty-free, high-res and absolutely beautiful! I won't be able to make up my mind which one to use for a template. Oh the agony of decisions!

I also got to playing around with Fireworks, and made myself a Link-to-Me button. It's over on the left ... click on it for copy-paste HTML code to put it on your site. I also made buttons, also over on the left, for a couple of my bestest online buddies, Steve and Sharon. There's a couple more in the works ... so be on the lookout for the Goodie Fairy to bring tiny little bits of goodness your way!

Oh ... and one last thing before I retire ...

It would be even better if I didn't have to go to work ... but I will take what I can get!

Through the eyes of a child

Sharon and I must be on the same brain-wave length today:

Andrew - a special child and his reaction to September 11.

I had been mentally rehearsing this post all evening. She scares me ... she really does.

As we near the second anniversary of September 11, I find my thoughts wandering back to that awful day more and more often. My co-workers and I have been reminiscing about where we were and what we were doing that day. My workplace was evacuated as we were less than two miles from the Y-12 nuclear weapons facility in Oak Ridge, TN. I was one of the last ones out of the building, and it totally creeped me out because it is usually filled at that that time of day with about 500 people. There were military patrols on the roof and the roadblocks were being set up as I left the city. That's when it started to hit me.

Anyone? Anyone? Bueller?

CBS News | Sex Crimes Cover-Up By Vatican? | August 7, 2003 19:37:34

CBS News | Vatican Targets Gay Marriage Laws | July 31, 2003 11:29:23

OK ... somebody better come up with a really good rationale for this bullshit. The Vatican has been caught with their robes pulled up, for sure. How the hell can they possibly explain this away? For years it has been Vatican policy to hide and keep secret the problem priests that molest children ... then they condemn gay marriage? Give me a fucking break!

I'm not Catholic ... I'm not really anything since I cannot justify the hypocrisy of organized religion, nor be a part of it. But I supposed that somewhere I once had some kind of respect for the Vatican once upon a time ... no more though!

Oh ... the irony! But I just can't get my mind wrapped around this one!

Me ... 15 years ago

In Michelle's Book - Welcome to my life. Do you have an appointment?

I tripped across this blog via the Blogging Bitches webring ... and I am still tripping. If I had the Internet and a Blog 15 years ago, I would be writing about almost the same things Michelle is ... attitude and all! Her rant about the idiots in the Walmart parking lot is MY rant, dammit! My thing is that the idiots follow me from the parking lot into the store and continue to torment me there ... everytime I turn around, the same fucking idiot is in my way again!!!

I laughed, I cried ... go visit Michelle's Life! Don't wait for the movie!

Kid Geek

I have a geek-girl in the making. My daughter Annie has been playing around with web site design and started to get pretty into it. So, I registered a domain for her and had it set up on my web hosting account. I installed a tagboard and Gallery for her. Now she working on filling it with content.

It's coming along nicely. If I do say so myself.
