Oh ... Really?

When Schools Ignore Bad Teachers

A rather intriguing scandal has rolled through the little city of Oak Ridge, TN. Montgomery (Monty) Koons is just the latest teacher to be accused of innappropriate behavior with a student in what seems to be an epidemic of teachers gone bad. The latest from WBIR also has a video of the news report, be sure to watch that. Now keep in mind, that school has had two opportunities in the recent past to take action with this teacher. What did they do in response to the second incident? They gave him a month long paid vacation, "to help him overcome the stress" from his job. That incident involved him shoving an 11 year old girl against a desk, and swatting her on the behind. He played it off as horseplay, and it was her word against his. The school took no further action. She was left to feel betrayed, and that she was being called a liar. In addition, she was rather well developed for an 11 year old, and says that this teacher seemed to pay a lot of visual attention to her chest. After she reported the butt swatting incident, she was made to feel so uncomfortable in his classroom that she had to transfer to another in the middle of the school year. Now, with this incident, she is reliving the trauma of that episode. The damage from this kind of thing is forever.

I wonder if the school had taken stronger measures back then, would another girl and her family be going through this now?

I am seriously pissed off right now, for a number of reasons, which I may or may not discuss here.

I think he's innocent. In fact, he was my teacher in 5th grade. I'm also female. In fact, he horseplayed with all students.

He worked with some of the worst-case kids, "high-risk" kids, mentally ill kids, etc... He volunteered and helped run the Jr. DARE Sertoma (sp?) in OR, which was a program dedicated to bettering the community and heling the needy. He is, without a doubt, the best teacher I ever had. I was a slacker, and he actually CARED that I slacked. He would tell me he was dissapointed in me. And his opinion mattered to me.

So, please don't judge before you know someone... It's not like it'd be the first time a teen had made up a story.

LissaKay's avatar He may be innocent of this thing he is being accused of now. The investigation will find out what, if anything happened last summer. And he may well have done all kinds of wonderful things as a teacher. But I do know for a fact that 5 years ago, he put his hands on a student inappropriately ... I know this because that girl is my daughter. What she went through because of that was not faked, could not be faked. If the schools had acted on this back then, the question of what he was doing with this girl this past summer would have never come up, because his teaching career would have been over back then.

The student involved is XXXXXXX's daughter. Make your own conclusion.

[Admin note: I do believe that publicly identifying the minor involved in this alleged affair goes way beyond the pale. *I* already knew who it was, I know her mother, and I know that, if the child was involved in this, there are reasons that have little or nothing to do with what you are implying.]

Thats a false accusation, he didn't teach 6th grade 5 years ago.

LissaKay's avatar Elise ... that will come as a great shock to everyone that was at Jefferson 5 years ago, you know. Especially since his personnel file shows very plainly that he was teaching there.

Nice try though.

Yes, Mr. Koons was working at the school five years ago, but he was teaching fifth grade, not sixth. He switched grades.
I believe that he is innocent. Mr. Koons was a wonderful teacher. I understand that you have your opinion, but I disagree with it.

LissaKay's avatar Opinion? Somehow I get the idea that you are a little shaky on the definition of that word.

That MY daughter was the recipient of inappropriate behavior by Mr Koons 5 years ago is not an opinion. It is a fact. Look up his personnel file. The news folks did, and they found it, and reported it. He was given a one month vacation for it.

Also, that if the schools had appropriately kicked him out back then, he could not have been accused of this now, is also fact.

I offered neither opinion nor statement as to the veracity of the claims made recently by this other teenage girl. That will be for those conducting the investigation to determine.

You don't remember what grade your daughter was in 5 years ago? Hmm.
I, too, think and hope Mr. Koons is innocent. He IS a wonderful man. It has been well over a month and there has been no more word in the media about this accusation. So, it seems as if this was false, unless of course they are being extremely tight-lipped.

LissaKay's avatar Just what, exactly, are you insinuating, Jessica? That it was NOT my daughter that was involved in the previous incident that earned Mr Koons some time off from work? His personnel file clearly shows the incident did occur. So what are you saying here? Hmm??

And the rabid defense of someone that has been accused of something this horrific who has a history of inappropriate behavior with students seems a little ... suspect. Perhaps a little self-reflection may be in order here.

Okay, well I know your daughter and I'm not going to comment on that incident. I have my own opinions about it, which are none of your business. But I'm just here to vouch for Mr.Koons. As others have said on here, he horse played with everyone. I also know the girl who is currently making these accusations against him and has been known to make false claims of having sex before. She was very close to him when I was in drama with them both but so was I. So saying that, why would he make sexual advancements towards her and not me? Mr.Koons is a wonderful person, and has not only gone out of his way for me, but her and several other students. Even if he did do it, which I do believe he is innocent, then why are you so quick to condemn him? Because of what he was accused doing to your daughter?
With this recent accusation, why isn't her fault? She was obviously very willing. And why isn't her parents fault, either? They should have taught her better and watched more closely.
But really, is your life so boring that you have to gossip about his? And slander him? It's none of yours, mine, nor anyone else's business.

And to be completely honest with you, what your daughter "went" through could very easily have been faked if she wanted sympathy and pity that bad. It's called acting. I know because I've played roles where a person is lying and just wants sympathy and pity and you would have never known.

I'm not saying she's lying, I'm just saying that it can be very easily faked.

LissaKay's avatar I am increasingly disappointed with Oak Ridge Schools, given the level of commentary here from some examples of past and present students of the school system. Mickey, you obviously slept through most of your English and reading classes, because your reading comprehension is terrible!

I am not, as I have stated here before ... several times ... condemning or judging Monty Koons. That is for the courts to decide, and they have. My contempt is for a school system that kept a teacher, one whom they knew was problematic, considering the number and type of past accusations (not all are on record, by the way), which then gave opportunity for the current accusation to occur.

To put it in simple terms, for you, Mickey, I am pissed off at the SCHOOL SYSTEM and that was my point here.

But thanks for playing ... nice try, come back when you have a clue.
