Here we go again … nuclear protestors on parade
Every year we go through this ... a commemoration/protest on the anniversary of the day we dropped the bomb and put an end to World War II in the Pacific. This year, it's a bit larger because it is the 60th anniversary. They said they would have at least 2000 in attendance ... it appears they fell a tad short of that. It looks closer to 200-300. I see about 100 vehicles and a couple of buses. They are in front of the Y-12 Nuclear Weapons research lab in Oak Ridge, TN, where the Manhatten Project was created in the early 1940's.Oh yeah ... this is happening right across the street from where I work, where I am pulling my monthly Saturday shift. I wish I had brought the good camera, all I have is my phone camera and it sucks for anything further than 5 feet away. I took a few shots while on my lunch break. Just before I had to get back to work, they marched to one of the gates and it looked like they were going to try to go over. Their purpose is to get arrested. A co-worker says that they were blocking the road near the main entrance, and just as she got through, the police decided to arrest them.
These are people who believe it would have been better for millions of both Japanese and Americans to die by conventional means over a period of years, than for 140,000 to die by a nuclear detonation that also brought an end to the war with Japan. Yeah ... that makes sense, all right.
Anyway ... here are a couple pics from my sucky little camera phone. I might try to get a little closer later this evening. I think this thing is going to go on all weekend. I bet more than a few of them will wind up in the ER for heat stroke ... it is hotter than, heh ... a nuclear explosion today.
Well crap ... I can't get Image Magick to resize the pics, so I will just link to the full size. Sorry about the suckage, this is a camera phone ...
